Stories about glass

Used in Antiquity

Glass made its appearance in Mesopotamia, nearly 5000 years ago, in the form of pearls and jewels. The Egyptians also used it, from around 1500 BC. But it was the Romans who made the first glass windows, of a composition very close to that of present-day glass.

Even today, in the Flat Glass Division, the Verrerie de Saint-Just uses the hand-blowing technique to produce glass in the traditional manner.

The glass-blowing revolution

The hand-blowing process opened up a new era for glass applications. Invented in the 1st century BC, it allowed the manufacture of hollow vessels. The Middle Ages popularised this process, with glass becoming a ‘must-have’ item in the home.

Legend : Even today, in the Flat Glass Division, the Verrerie de Saint-Just uses the hand-blowing technique to produce glass in the traditional manner.
